Bourbon & Chocolate Tasting Experience

Ingredients

1 bottle

1-2 bars

Milk Chocolate with Almonds

1-2 bars

Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt

1-2 bars

White Chocolate

Instructions

Step 1

Chew the chocolate sample and breathe through your nose to take in the full breath of the flavors.

Step 2

Take a sip of the Woodford Reserve Bourbon or Double Oaked.

Step 3

Cleanse your palate with a sip of cool or room temperature water.

Step 4

Observe a conversational pause before moving on to the next sample.

PREPARE

Arrange the sample clockwise on a small plate. Conduct the sampling of each in the order indicated below with each followed by a sip of Woodford Reserve Bourbon or Double Oaked. After each, rinse the palate with a sip of water before the next sample.

THE TASTING

The tasting includes three different chocolate pairings that will accentuate certain characteristics of Woodford Reserve Bourbon and Double Oaked: white chocolate, milk chocolate with almond, and dark chocolate with sea salt. The chocolates all have individual flavor properties that will excite the palate and bring out different subtleties of Woodford Reserve, depending on the expression you choose to pair with the tasting. 

SAMPLE 1 – WHITE CHOCOLATE

Begin the tasting with a piece of  white chocolate.

Woodford Reserve Bourbon

WHY: White chocolate is very fatty & creamy, which coats the pallet nicely, softens the alcohol, and highlights the citrus and tropical fruit notes and baking spice notes in Woodford Reserve Bourbon such as cooked apples, cinnamon & creamy marshmallow.

BRINGS OUT: Cinnamon apple pie covered in whipped cream for a long smooth finish

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

WHY: White chocolate is very fatty & creamy, which coats the pallet nicely, softens the alcohol, and highlights the stone fruit notes and aromatic notes in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked such as peaches, apricot, cream and rich vanilla.

BRINGS OUT: Vanilla, sweet banana pudding, cooked peaches &  a long creamy finish

SAMPLE 2 – MILK CHOCOLATE WITH ALMONDS

Next up is the milk chocolate with almonds pairing. Any milk chocolate with nuts could act as a substitute.

Woodford Reserve Bourbon

WHY: The fat in the milk chocolate and the toasted almonds highlight the spice and sweet aromatic notes.

BRINGS OUT: Clove, nutmeg, mint, caramel, brown sugar & vanilla

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

WHY: The tannic acid in the nut highlights the spice and wood contributions of the toasted oak barrels that are used to mature Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

BRINGS OUT: Cinnamon, cedar wood, mint & a roasted hazelnut finish

 

SAMPLE 3 – DARK CHOCOLATE WITH SEA SALT

Last is the dark chocolate with sea salt pairing. Plain dark may be substituted if needed.

WHY: The dark chocolate highlights the spice and dark fruit notes in Woodford Reserve Bourbon. The rich dark chocolate brings out notes of bold cedarwood and pine, dried dark fruit such as cranberry and fig.

PLAIN DARK CHOCOLATE BRINGS OUT: Pine, cedarwood, cinnamon, dried cranberry & brown sugar

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

WHY: The dark chocolate highlights the spice and sweet aromatics flavors in Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.. The rich dark chocolate brings out notes of baking spice and roasted coffee, and the salt contributes to more earthy flavors such as tobacco and leather.
